Old heads,

Got a question for you seeing you have seen and heard it all. 

Why would a dispatcher tell a crew(sitting out of yard waiting to come
in) to write down a 6 digit number with no reason why or what its for.
Didnt match anything in disp bulletins and wasnt a car number in their
train. Other train crews heard it too and were wondering why.
Dispatcher never did tell them what it was for just ordered them to do
it.  Got any ideas? We are all baffled.
