Carey incident, supposedly EN on H702 ran signal at West End of double
track at Springs on the Columbus Sub. The W314 frac sand train headed
in opposite direction had the signal and was going from single track to
#2 EB and was struck about 10 cars behind the locomotive, by H702.
The 702 had PTC turned off prior because of some issue and had been
given permission to cut it out. The H702 had just set out cars at
Carey and the Conductor was in a PTI van waiting for Engr. to pick him
up at a road crossing short of the signal. The train passed the condr
and road crossing without stopping or blowing whistle. Engr was
unconscious or asleep. EN of 702 told police all he remembers is
locomotives rolling over the bank into field.
Poster child for why we need 2 crew in the cab.
