Asleep At The Wheel

Casey Jones you'd better,
watch your speed...

"The railroad is a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week operation", many of us have been told, when requesting some extra 'rest' between jobs. Unfortunately, the people that make the railroad move, like all other people, do not operate "24 hours a day, 7 days a week".

Anyone who's worked around the clock has either seen, or experienced first-hand, the inevitable effects of sleep deprivation. Maybe it was you, maybe it was the jitney driver, maybe it was....

The real fun is when someone tries to explain to the crew-caller that they are too tired to go to work.

Hogger

I haven't been an engineer for long but I do remember a bulletin that
came out informing us that they had motors that linked programs and
would automatically control the throttle as needed for the train
tonnage and terrain. I have been on those like you said. I have watched
them too from the control consist screen. The control monitor screen
will give some info too sometimes. Mechanical desk told me not all
motors will do it. They started this linking program so that crews
wouldn't have to stop the trains and go back and shut a motor down
after on line of road. This whole conservation program is nothing more
than a smoke and screen job for who the hell knows what.
Someone needs to explain how in the hell they have come up with these
new tonnage ratings for the motors and why engineers cant get a black
and white printout out of the new ratings. I have tried for over 6
months. They supposedly have 2 programs the fuel pad mechanical can use
to assign power to a train. When they bring it up it show some motors
being able to pull over 12,000 tons by themselves. We all know this is
total crap and they believe it is just to use less power.
I was told that the head boss down in Jacksonville over the power desk
told them that it has nothing to do with making track speed. It is all
based on whether or not the train might stall on its territory. This
makes sense to me. He said if the train will move the power is
adequate. Speed is irrelevant. So there you have it. Engineers need
to get over it. They need to quit worrying about running track speed.
Just get it across the road no matter how many crews it takes. If you
cant handle working 12 hours every trip then come in the yard or quit!
We heard a TM telling a crew who was giving them crap about their
tonnage rating for their power and their train that it wasn't their
call to make and to get on their power and get on their train. If they
assign you power that you think wont make the trip at track speed then
you got to live with it. It wont do you any good anymore anyway. I had
2 motors last week that according to their tonnage program could pull
19,000 tons by themselves. Yeah maybe at 10 mph on flat terrain but not
up hill. Its a joke. You cant even pick up power on line of road and add
it to your train and know what the hell you supposedly have. You got to
call the mechanical desk and ask them and cover your arss that way. If
one more dispatcher ask if I have adequate power on the mark up Im
going to puke. It's just a way to cover someone else's arss! I just
tell them per management I do.

Boychuck combs his hair to the side and mashes it down. He loves them
skinny jeans. Grown man trying to look young and hip but comes off
looking like a douche bag. He might be one of the douchiest people I
ever met. What retarded ignorant clown. I should have beat his ass when
I had the chance. It amazes me how these idiots get into high positions
within the company. Must of sucked lots of dick.

Brothers

Lets get this info straight. There has been a rumor going around that
you can call the "TO" desk when you have a hot shot intermodal train
that has UPS freight on it to run without any speed control that is
used to conserve fuel. THIS IS NOT TRUE! What the "TO" desk does is
send in an order to run your train first out in front of anyone else.
It has nothing to do with controlling your speed or manipulating the
conservation program. If you don't believe this call them yourself.
There has been no notice put out that we are to do this each time we
get one. In fact, as far as many of us have been told there hasn't
been anything put out in writing about this. The question is why? If
there has been a notice out many of us would like to know when and in
what issue. It is hard as hell to find anything about "TO" and
updates to begin with. So if you know where this info came from please
let us know!
